Cambridge Bay
Population: 1,309
The regional centre for the Kitikmeot region, Cambridge Bay is one of the busiest hubs for business in western Nunavut. Cambridge Bay is also the gateway for one of Nunavut’s nature lodges and some of the best fishing in the world.
The Inuktitut name for Cambridge Bay is Iqaluktuuttiaq, which translates to “a good place with lots of fish”; outstanding fishing can be experienced in the lakes and rivers of the area.
Ovayok (Mount Pelly) Territorial Park is approximately 15 kilometres east of Cambridge Bay. At over 200m high, Ovayok stands out from the surrounding landscape, and is the central feature of the park. For generations, Ovayok has been an important landmark and source of legend for the Inuit and their predecessors. Today, there are over 20 km on five trails available to discover. There are designated camping areas and interpretive panels throughout the park.
The Arctic Coast Visitor Centre is a great place to explore the history of the quest for the Northwest Passage. Staff will also help arrange a local tour and provide information and a guidebook on Ovayok Territorial Park.
Every spring locals celebrate the season at the Omingmak Frolics. The week-long festivities include snow-mobile racing, ice-sculpting, Arctic games, bike racing, and other fun activities.
